How to Become a Better Leader: A Blueprint for Leadership
One would start with a blueprint if they were building a house. Because it includes information beyond just building instructions, this blueprint comes in handy. The finished home is also described.
What connection does this make to leadership, then?
I asked a group of leaders I was speaking to last month what qualities they thought made a great leader. (In the gathered order of responses)
Good at listening, full of energy and passion, demonstrating gratitude, a visionary, a role model, trustworthy, honest, credible, charismatic, well-organized, knowledgeable, and able to build teams. They also build teams, solve problems, set an example for others, are patient, understand their followers, are consistent, understand themselves, and are able to adapt to change.
I should also mention that when I pose this topic to audiences elsewhere, I basically always get back the same list. Some helpful insights flow from this.
- Examine the contents of the list. Each of these traits has to do with the human aspect of leadership. It's intriguing since I frequently hear individuals disparage this aspect of leadership by using adjectives like "soft" or "touchy feely." In actuality, using these qualities calls for more strength than not.
- Take note of what is left off the list. Aversions to being severe, punishing, dominating, violent, merciless, vengeful, serious, short-tempered, harsh, angry, and rough are all absent from this list (as well as all lists from other programmes). It's noteworthy that numerous popular portrayals of leadership prioritise a minimum of one of these "hard" attributes. These traits serve as a haven for those who lack the courage (or the know-how) to exercise their human side as leaders.
- What are your thoughts? In relation to the list of desirable traits, how would you rank your own performance as a leader? How would your subordinates characterise your leadership if you were to survey them? Which qualities from the "hard" or "soft" lists would they list? Is there any way you could strengthen any of the "soft" traits to increase your effectiveness? What about the other executives inside your company? Do they actually bring out the best in people?
People are drawn to leaders who demonstrate sincere consideration, civility, and regard for them. They are looking for leaders who will enable them to achieve more success. They look up to leaders who show them the way to a better world and inspire them to achieve it.
