The terms management and leadership should be used differently, despite the fact that some people use them interchangeably. In actuality, there may be leaders of entirely disorganised organisations.  However, managers in this sense are only possible in situations where roles are defined by organised institutions.

There are significant analytical benefits to separating management from leadership. It makes it possible to focus on studying leadership without being constrained by requirements pertaining to broader management concerns.

To be clear, managing involves many aspects, one of which is leadership. Being a good leader is just one of the many requirements to becoming a good manager. The other requirements of managing, or performing the whole managerial job, also play a significant role in guaranteeing that a manager will be a good leader. In order to combine human and material resources to achieve goals, managers must perform all of the duties associated with their position. Having a defined function and some discretionary power to back up the manager's decisions are essential for doing this.

The ability to follow is the foundation of leadership. Stated differently, a person becomes a leader because other people are willing to follow them. Furthermore, people have a tendency to follow those who they believe offer a way to fulfil their own needs, wants, and desires. Motivation and leadership are strongly related concepts. One can better comprehend what individuals seek and the reasons for their actions by having a greater understanding of motivation. Additionally, through creating an environment within the organisation, leaders have the power to either awaken or calm their subordinates' motives in addition to responding to them. These two elements are equally crucial to management and leadership.

Influence, or the skill of persuading others to work voluntarily and enthusiastically towards the accomplishment of group objectives, is a definition of leadership. In an ideal world, people would be encouraged to cultivate a readiness to work as well as a willingness to work fervently and confidently.

In actuality, leaders of totally disorganised groupings are possible.  However, managers as they are now defined can only exist in settings where duties are defined by organised hierarchies.
